5 Simple Habits for Better Sleep Tonight

Struggling to fall asleep or stay asleep? These five evidence-backed habits can help you wind down faster and wake up feeling more rested — no expensive gadgets required.

We spend roughly a third of our lives asleep, yet so many of us treat good rest as an afterthought. The good news is that better sleep doesn't require a complete lifestyle overhaul — small, consistent changes can make a real difference.

 1. Keep a Consistent Schedule Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day — yes, even on weekends — helps regulate your body's internal clock. Over time, this makes falling asleep and waking up feel more natural and less like a struggle.

 2. Dim the Lights an Hour Before Bed Bright light, especially the blue light from phones and laptops, tells your brain it's still daytime. Try switching to warmer, dimmer lighting in the evening and setting devices aside earlier than usual.

 3.  Watch What You Drink Caffeine can linger in your system for six hours or more, and while alcohol might make you feel drowsy, it disrupts deeper sleep stages later in the night. Cutting both back in the afternoon and evening can improve sleep quality.

4. Create a Wind-Down Routine A short, repeatable routine — reading, stretching, journaling — signals to your brain that it's time to relax. Consistency matters more than the specific activity.

5. Keep Your Bedroom Cool and Dark A slightly cool room (around 65°F/18°C) paired with blackout curtains or an eye mask can meaningfully improve sleep depth for many people.

None of these habits are complicated, but stacking a few together consistently tends to produce noticeably better rest within a couple of weeks. Start with one or two and build from there.
